How to use skirmishing cavalry

Postby Dan Atherton » Wed Feb 08, 2012 10:06 am

In response to the shocking  news that skirmishing cavalry with feigned flight are far from immortal what do folk consider the best way to utilise such units?

I would now certainly deploy such units who have the choice as open order as a no-brainer unless fighting all infantry and would also consider leaving units out of the army all together in 2500 point lists on 6X4 tables.

So what is the best tactic for those cavalry that have to deploy in skirmish? Such as the Numidian cavalry that formed a core of the Carthaginian force. They are now incredibly vulnerable yet expensive at 29 points each.

The two tactics I have come up with after little serious thought involve.
1) making sure you charge first against other skirmishers, though this isn't there strength.
2) running open order cavalry in front of them to "clear the way"
Cheers,
