Open Order Charge Distance

Postby staffordgames » Wed Apr 04, 2012 2:19 pm

How far does an open order unit charge when in rough terrain?

We played 'Escalating Engagement' last night for the first time and very interesting it was too!

If an army takes a ballista which is unable to move can you actually bring it on the table from reserve at all?

Can anyone answer this question?

If you don't know the answer for certain how do you play it?

My take on this Roland is the clue is on P35 'Moving Chargers' it basically says that Closed Order troops count charge movement X2 in rough terrain. It doesn't mention Open Order troops.

Then on P20 'Rough Terrain' it says Open Order troops may not march in rough terrain but do not count distances doubled. It may seem that due to the fact that troops don,t count distances doubled it allows them to charge normal distance which would be 20cm. In reality it would be much harder to march in rough terrain in order to keep a formation together than it would be to charge were the formation is broken and just going for the enemy's throat.

Not sure on this but that's my thoughts.

As for the Ballista I am hoping that you can't bring them on.

I haven't been on the forum for a bit; took a bit of a break and had a few field trips investigating Welsh medieval history and battle sites.

Open order infantry (but not cavalry - see under the bullet points under Rough terrain, pg 20) charge double their MR in rough terrain.

Nope, not at all.
