EGYPTIAN ARMY

Postby Keith T on Sun Feb 14, 2010 2:44 pm

Hi
I am hopeing to build an egyptian army next, I have bought some regements from FOUNDRY, 2 x 20 archers, 20 marines, and 12 chariot runners, these seem good sizes so far.
But they sell spearmen in a unit of 30 figures and a unit of axemen in 28 figures, this seem a bit big, What should I go for 16 or 20 or 24 or bigger?
I have not bought any chariots yet but though 2 units of 5 with general and army standard in one, was not going to bother with the light cavalry.
Any other units I should have, sujestions please.

Depends on the total points you built your list, Keith :)
30 is pretty solid in bigger games but 24 might be enough for smaller ones for the spearmen.
You also can have Nea'rin chariots, which are pretty good for punch-having-chariots instead of shooting-plattforms.

10 chariots from Foundry might be a bit expensive, have a look at the Newline Design chariots/unit deals to save money. They compare fine to the Foundry infantry.

That's an understatement! That's like saying a Van Gogh might be a bit expensive. However, they are the best out there.

Anyways,Olaf is correct in offering you advice on a nice and cheaper alternative in Newline Design. :)

Hi I am doing a 2,000 point army to begin with, as regard to foundry I try and wait for one of their 20% discount days and buy their unit deals which works out ok [ about 30% of their list price of the individual blisters] I would struggle to justifie the full price.
Thanks for the comments, anyone else got some advice or hints ?

Try e-bay and forums and you will still get a better price then Foundry offering the 20%.(which is really just the old prices that should have stayed!)

I would go for newline, they really are nice figures and at £4.50 per chariot and 0.75 for a figure you can not go wrong.

I would also look at Essex

Just had a quick visit to Warhammer World [ as I live quite close] and a look at the Biblical armys at the GT, now I am unsure what size of infantry unit to go for, some players seem to like 24 fig units but one or two had as many as 40 figures in a unit [spearmen] even archers were in 24 figs or bigger.
Which is better smaller more manoeuvrable units or bigger tougher units that can take a lot of punishment?
I think chariots were in units of 5 [seems a good size], skirmishers in 12's, cavalry 8-10 figs.
Your comments please.

The biblical period has very little armour therefore when you start taking casulaties especially on Bow armed troops it is likely they have no armour at all - so they die - quickly! So try to go for bigger units, also help you if you had a few ranks and git caught with a charge...

You will not move the archers a lot in a game - if you do tehn you only fire front rank - would recommend no more than 6 or 8 frontage... personally I like 24 figs in a unit gives option for 6x4 or 8x3...even 12x2 if you want more fire power... this of course refers to formed units - skirmishers 10 is a good number in my book (although if you are more comeptition orientated then 9 is the magic number as it requires 3 casualties for a panic test from shooting).

Spear blocks - again I like 24, for games below 2000 points, if playing bigger games >2k then go for 30s, 32s, 40s etc...

5 plus a hero/chracter in a chariot unit is good as you would need to loose 4 chariots before a panic test from shooting and 6 is a good size to move about battle field. Bigger games I may take 8 chariots in a unit.

Agree on Foundry prices - even with 20% off they are so over priced - I will no longer purchase any of their figures - normally when I go to nottingham for an event (like WAB GT this weekend) I always used to stop of at foundry to see what bargains I could pick up - no longer I am afariad its a comeplete waste of time now).

Fully agree with Tony and Olaf on Newline Designs - they have some great deals (check website on Monday! newlinedesigns.co.uk HINT!) especially on the chariots packs... and teh are nice figures - not large and fit very well with foundry biblicals.

13 - thats will simply not do - hittites should have a LOT of chariots - as they must take 25% of the army points and there is no upper limit! and those 3 crew chariots are nasty, very nasty!

Thanks Andy & Olaf
Very helpfull on unit size and why, think I will prepair for a 2,000 + army so minimum of 24 figures in an archer unit and say 30+ figures in a spearmen unit. [can always remove a few for smaller games]

Newline design. This is an eye opener for me, if the figures are as good as you say then at these prices I would be foolish indeed to buy foundry,I will place a small order and see what the castings are like.

thanks for all the help.
