Late Achaemenid Persians

Postby Mithridates » Fri May 11, 2012 7:48 am

Am building up my army and hence my concern that the list has gaps.

If this is meant to be the army of Darius III then I would suggest there should be no sparabara. Rather, close order infantry used Greek style shields while lighter troops with javelins and bows would have the crescent shaped taka.

Satraps could have Guard infantry as well and these are perhaps less likely to be stubborn. Why only one unit of Kardakes? Probable that they should not be classed as levy. Some Kardakes could be fielded with taka as peltasts - in standard sized units.

There should be levy infantry with spears as well as bows. Allied infantry are absent - thinking of colourful types such as the Lykians.

Royal Guard cavalry were re-armed with longer spears before Gaugamela so could be given lances (1 unit only).

Hi,

I am also building a Persian army, and agree that there are loads of gaps. I will be using the list as a bit of a guide, and just making new units up, to fill them. Such as Takabara and levy spears, etc.

If you have the FOG book, immortal fire, that has most things listed, i think.

have a look here for some thoughts.... http://satrapminiatures.blogspot.com/20 ... sians.html

Steve

Cyrus and I have played the odd game - he is down the road from me!

Agree about the FOG lists, have also used DBMM and WAB.

Slowly getting there.

Cheers

Hi, Garry!

Remember that the HC lists are not intended as tournament lists (in fact, HC is not intended as a tournament game), so you can make every change you consider appropriate for your games and/or scenarios.

I don't have the lists book yet (still on its way from the States to Chile), but I intend to use it as a "starting point" for my own lists, using my DBM and FoG army books to fine-tune them. In fact, I already started to design a Mid Republican Roman and a Later Macedonian list, both based on my FoG armies with a few DBM touches, to recreate the battles of Cynoscephalae and Pydna. As soon as I have some advance on them I'll post it here on in the main HC forum.

Good luck with your army :D

Hi Gandamar

I did raise this issue on the Hail Caesar forum and they confirmed your point. War and Conquest has gone with free web based lists but with commercially published ones I did expect a slightly higher standard.

The HC lists are generally fine but have to say I was disappointed with the late Persian example. Interesting current discussion on "The Miniatures Page" on sparabara. Like you I have used both WRG and FOG as well as WAB lists to create the army.

Thanks for your comments and will be interested to see your future posts.

Cheers
