Help With HatPW Iberians List ?

Postby VikingSlayer » Sun Jul 15, 2012 8:52 pm

So first of all I've recently gotten back into WAB and I'm puzzled as to where to find AoA2. It seems my reentry into the hobby coincided with the apparent demise (commercially at least) of WAB, much to my dismay :( .

So for the time being I'm using the Hannibal book to start an Iberian Spanish army in the nieghbourhood of 1750-2000. Basically I'm thinking blocks of ~24-32 Scutarii w/ pilae and Heroic leaders leading  , and as many units of 9 or so Balearic slingers as possible. Other than that I'm going to have ~6-7 light cav just for jav harrassment, and maybe if points allow a unit of heavy cav. Also I'm not too keen on Caetrati, unless there's a reason to take a few over more slingers and Scutarii I'm missing... Once I have a final list I'll post it here but any general advice would be great, as I'm anxiously waiting to paint some Scutarii...

The Spanish used all iron throwing spears called the saunion by one Roman writer, or the more pilum-like falarica.

Anyway, onto lists. Others I am sure will echo that 6-7 light cavalry are just going to run at the first sound of anyone going, "Boo!". Your caetrati are an essential choice as they are able to fight enemy skirmishers and their morale is good. You are also not allowed any Balearic slingers without at least one other skirmish unit.

You may like to experiment with a smaller unit or two of scutarii without heavy spears but with added javelins so that they may exploit their feigned flight.

Read the Special Rules for Slingers. Every other slinger unit may be Balearic slingers; so no more than half your slinger units may be Balearic. Also note the restriction on unit size; no Balearic slinger unit may be larger than any other skirmishing unit in the army.

Stuart's comments are well worth considering. Like most other armies, the Spanish work best as a combined-arms force.

I'd second the comments above, also within period the caetrati can be very useful indeed, because there is little long range missile fire to thin them out and their feigned flight makes them a real pain for the enemy to deal with. The cavalry are very good too. I have a Lusitanian force that I'm very fond of.

On this note, what company makes the best Spanish cav? I've looked at Renegade (little variation), First Corps (unpainted faces seem a bit goofy...maybe better when painted?), A&A, and maybe one other. I'm trying to find some allied cav for my Polybian ROmans.

Thanks
