Sources for Tibetans 7th to 10th centuary

Postby Grizz » Fri Jun 15, 2012 5:24 pm

Can anybody recommend any good sources on the above army?

I'm looking for organisation, tactics, images - for some idea on how to paint them, etc

Also any battles of their battles / campaigns would be good too

Cheers

There is an excellent book on Tibetan armour. I think published by the metropolitan museum of art. Not cheap as I recall. If you go into Amazon and do a search for Tibetan armour you should find it.

I think the book Jim is talking about is called

Warriors of the Himalayas, Rediscovering the arms and armour of Tibet. By Donald J. LaRocca.

ISBN 1-58839-180-9 hardback. 1-58839-181-7 paperback

I got my copy from caliver when he was a couple of hundred yards from where I live. Since he's moved my military book buying has almost gone down to zero.

The Beckwith book is good if you want some general info on the Tibetan military and conquests, but as for art work it is a no go, there is only one pic, and thats on the front cover, it is of men in armour though, the picture comes from a book called, A Cultural History of Tibet, by D Snellgrove and H Richardson, printed by Weidenfeld and Nicolson in 1968.

Try this site http://tibet.prm.ox.ac.uk/tibet_collections.html or best to try any old British military manual/book from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, as remember the old saying, if a country's been invaded, the British did it first.

Or as Tony Says..try this linkhttp://www.amazon.com/Warriors-Himalayas-Rediscovering-Armor-Tibet/dp/0300111533
