New to ww 1, advice please

Postby Keith T » Fri Jun 08, 2012 2:44 pm

Hi All
I have never played ww1 before but I am reading up on the period and haveing seen a very good demo game at triples this year I would like to give it a go :) .

So what figures/manufaturers do you recomend 28mm prefered.

What rules do you recomend, I have a copy of warhammer ww1, any others, simpler the better.

I fancy the early war 'no trenches'.

Any good books on uniforms, british and german to begin with.

cheers

Keith
for the Early War, Great War Miniatures do a great 28mm range, (and we stock them here  http://scarabminiatures.com/index.php?m ... cPath=5_25 )

There are other manufacturers, (Old Glory, Renegade for starters) but these are easy to get hold of.

Warhammer Great War is fine, we do gaming days based on that rule set, if you troll back through the threads you will find links to previous days we have run. We are just confirming a date for the next one. We do Early and Late war games.

Quite a few folks prefer Late War, as this gives more choice for troop types, and its not all trenches, a common misconception, but Early War is fine as well.

You will find on the Scarab Forum (http://scarabminiatures.com/forum/) a few regulars very keen on the Great War in general, and 'encouraging' me to get on with our own rule set, so you can hop on over there to talk more about books and stuff, there are plenty to choose from, so you might want to select an army first.

Hope that helps, and welcome in to a fantsacinating period of history.
kind regards
Rob Broom

+1 on Great War Minis, but shop around for the best deal.

For example Maelstrum seem to charge less than Scarab for the same figures:

For early war minis, you've also got Gripping Beast, which are quite slight looking figures but very nice. Renegade Miniatures do both early and late war, they are chunkier looking but very good value.
Most of the Early War pictures in the Great War rulebook are REnegade, most of the late war ones are Great War Miniatures.
And I find Osprey books the best source for uniforms. THere are some websites about giving useful uniform advice - Landships springs to mind. But just a search for "WW1 British uniform" in google images brings up plenty of inspiration.
