Collisions; and being "Abandoned"

Regards collisions. In my last game my Spanish gunboat was "run over" by a Britsh 3rd rate. Yet I was able to inflict D3 damage to his vessel's waterline. Yet this is the same amount of damage a much larger 'unrated' vessel could cause. How is this possible, surly a 'rowing boat' would cause far less damage.?

Second question;

A ship was 'decrewed',thus 'Abandoned'; can a ships physician still restore a crew 'point' at the end of the turn ?.
