Republican Roman

Postby Razorbackoz » Mon Nov 28, 2011 12:54 pm

Just a quick question.

In the army troop values it states Hastati and/or Principes fielded as small units.

Does that mean I must field as small?

The Rep Roman list looks a little weak ie: small units, Clash, Sustained and Stamina is all a little underwhelming compared to other armies. Don't misunderstand what I am trying to say, I don't expect it to be the numero uno of armies and it should have some limitations and it should require good generalship to be able to use successfully against all armies in and around the period.

Am I wrong in thinking this way? Mind you I have not played a game of HC as yet and I have just started to build a Rep Roman army, just awaiting the figs from Aventine.

I've not got the Hail Ceasar lists yet, but have had several Republican Roman / Carthaginains bashes using the mail Hail Ceasar rules. We found that small units for the Romans just did not work.

The Hail Caesar army lists are guidelines, not gospel.

On page 41 in the Camillan Rome section it says that:

"If players prefer to to field units at standard size they can certainly do so and suitable stats for full-size units can be extracted from the Marian list."

And on page 53 in the Republican Rome section it says:

"As mentioned in the Camillan list we would not quibble with players who prefer to deploy their units as standard sized rather than small if that is their preference, the Marian list has suitable stats for such units."

There are some distinct advantages to fielding Republican Roman legionaries as small units, such as the ability to fight 2-to-1 against standard-sized enemy units. But ultimately, how you choose to field them is entirely up to you.

Hope this helps! :)

Cheers,
Scott

Ah yes, thank you Scott :)

Totally overlooked that, you know how it is, tend to focus on the negatives and miss everything else ;)

I've only played a game with the Marian Roman list which worked really well. If you have your hastati, principes and triarii as standard units they have clash and sustained values of 7 which is pretty good and will wear down most barbarian warbands over a few turns. The real key to winning combats in HC (apart from rolling many hits) is to use supporting units well which is really what the manipular formation of a Republican Roman army was supposed to do.

Using Roman Republic as small units is a massive advantage if you are able to apply the flexibility of massing teo small units against standard or four against large.

in addition the flexibility to manovure cannot be underestimated when fighting at close quarters.

The real challenge is ensuring that the frontages are correct otherwise you will not get the 2 : 1 ratio you need .
I came, I saw, I wanted - therefore I bought! Its just convincing the missus that I really need the figures, thats the problem.

Hi Paul

Once I build the army with the options of fielding small and standard units, I'll try both :)
