Elephant Crew Casualties

Postby staffordgames » Tue Jan 31, 2012 9:34 pm

At the tournament on Sunday there was some discussion on how to work out casualties to elephant crew.

It says that any rolls to hit that are 6's kill a crew as well, if they are in a howdah then they will get a 4+ save but no save for armour shield etc.

There is also no mention of a roll to if the howdah save is failed, is that right or have I missed something?

Hi Roland.
Just read through the elephant.

Rolls to hit need to be converted in to wounds before any crew are harmed. I have come to this conclusion because it states that the extra hits are not counted towards resolution. (page 95 para 5)

So in my opinion the sequence go's as follows.

Roll to hit against Ele.
Ele saves
Roll to "wound"
Any successful "wounds" (usually needing 6s) result in attempts to kill crew.
Any further 6's kill crew, unless there is a Howdah in which case they have a 4+ save.

I think the confusion has partly been cause by the use if the word hits in two different contexts. Stu clarified this in the errata in relation to running amok changing to "damaging hits".

Hope that helps and I am not horribly mistaken!
Cheers,

Dan

Yep, Dan has it spot on. If you cause a wounding hit, you get a bonus roll. On a 6 a crewman dies.

This came into play with our game yesterday. Ancient Indians vs. Ancient Indians. Thanks Stuart for the comment above. Cleared the question in fine form. I made a note in the CoE rule book. Blog posting on the battle soon plus some other questions from play.
1st time out with Chariot/elephant armies in mass.
