Warrior Miniatures, Navwar, Skytrex

Postby Tupinamba » Mon Feb 27, 2012 3:37 pm

Hi guys,

I´ve bought the Trafalgar rule book a while ago and have been playing with the idea of building a fleet to battle a like minded mate.

Originaly, I thought about langton or ghq miniatures, but their prices were already premium and now went ever further up. Shipping included, it got simply too steep for us.

I´ve had some further looking in the interwebs and came across three other enterprises for 1/1200 naval napoleonics miniatures, Warrior Miniatures, Navwar and Skytrex, all of which with far fairer prices and seemingly nice miniatures. I´d like to hear the comments of the community about these three alternatives and, if possible, maybe pictures in comparison with each other and the above said market leaders?

Also, what´s up with the game? Last topic here is from july 2011... :(
Cheers

Well, that silence says something about the state of Trafalgar gaming.. :(

Nevertheless, we´ve decided to stick with Navwar. If anynone knows their miniatures and finds them utterly rubbish, please say so, as its now or never. :) We´ll build 2000 pts fleets each, plus some merchantmen. I´ll go French and he British.

Cheers

Ive had quite a bit of luck with Figurehead ships. Smaller scale but much nore affordable. Paint up nice and look great on the table.

I really like the Tumbling Ships - great models at a great price.

There are some images of mine here: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=5314

That's just the 28mm stuff, I'm not even going to start on the other scales.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.

The quality of your 1/2400 painting is quite impressive! But we´ve decided on 1/1200 and I honestly don´t think I´d manage to paint smaller miniatures to such a niveau. Navwar prices are really good, actually. With just 50 pounds I´ll have a 2000 points French list plus several smaller ships and some merchantmen for objectives and campaigns.

Any comments or photos on them? Particularly in comparison with Langton? From what I´ve seen in the internet, they seem quite good and I´d like to know how exactly much better Langton/GHQ are.

Cheers

I used to have some Navwar ships a long time ago and they are very good models for the price you pay for them.

Thanks mate.

Coming from one with such a beautiful fleet I think we can go with Navwar without regrets then. But there is also the caveat "for the price you pay for them".. What I´d like to know is really how much superior the Langton/GHQ stuff is. It´d have to be at least twice as good to justify it being 4 times as expensive...

By the way, do you know any more specific forum for Trafalgar? Where people post BRs etc.?

The service from Navwar is top notch with really fast turn-rounds, I'd recommend that you just order a couple of ships and see if you like them.

As to fora, I'm not really sure I've not played Trafalgar for about 18 months. I really need more time to get some of these games played.

Im hoping Navwar have improved then. In the past their hulls lacked detail and the masts had the sails moulded on flat. Metal was soft and masts tended to droop under the weight of the sails.

I am also a bit sus as to why they don't have images of their models on their website are they embarrassed?

Hmm, an interesting criticism. I don´t like it either that they don´t have pictures of their minis. However, I´ve seen the following pictures of navwar minis (at least they are labled thus) in the internet and they look good:

Would you have other pictures? Particularly in comparison with Langton/ghq stuff? And in comparison with Skytrex and Warrior Miniatures? These two other ranges are slightly more expensive, but have still fair prices.

I´d just try it out, but as I live in Brazil, shipping costs make it impractical to buy small ammounts just for testing.

I ended up buying Langtons and they are worth the extra cash.

The thing I like is the sails are moulded separate, you can get different sail settings eg fully furled to full sail. Also Langtons have ships either "at quarters" with guns run out or without gives you choice.

GHQ are supposed to be nice as well but again no images on their website.
