massed missiles/combined formation

Postby Alexmunky » Sun Apr 29, 2012 6:25 pm

If I have a unit of 12 spearmen (deployed 6x2) with javelins and 12 archers in the rear 2 ranks and they use massed missiles- do I get 6 javelin shots and 9 bow shots? based on point 4 page 105 -the rank of archers closest to the front always shoots at full effect or is it the 1st rank shoots at full effect and the rest is halved, and the text about the first rank of archers really means the first shooting rank?

Yes, it is the first rank of archers. You would receive 6 javelins and 9 bow shots. Only the first rank of javelins would be able to shoot.

But..... if your unit is on a hill all missile armed troops can use massed missiles so I think you would then get 1 1/2 ranks of javelin, and 1 1/2 ranks of bow. so 9 of each.

ok new follow up question - reference p105 again - 'the rank of archers closest to the frontalways shoots in its entirity, with subsequent ranks shooting at half effect.' so the 12 spear 12 archer formation 6 wide 4 deep loses a spearman to missile fire the ranks front to back are: 6 spearmen - 5 spearman and 1 archer - 6 archers- 5 archers - how mny shots now?
6 javelins plus....

1. 6 bow shots - 1 from the archer in the spearman rank 3 from the 3 rd rand and 2 from the 4th rank.
2. 9 shots - based on 6 from the 1st full rank consisting only archers and 3 from the the other 6 archers in the formation?
3. 8 bow shots - based on 6 from the 1st full rank consisting only archers and 2 from the subsequent rank of archers which has 5 models and none from the archers in front of the 1st archer rank?????

Hi
you can sort all this by remembering that a rank has to have at least 4 figures in it when 4 spearmen have been lost it might become a problem to work out. :(
that said I apreciate you asking, so I would sort this out and always go with answer 2. 9 shots.
Ive never played it any other way or had problems because of it. :)
Cheers
Andy

I used to be indecisive.
Now I’m not so sure.
