Beginner seeking advice...

Postby Thaladan » Sat May 19, 2012 6:41 pm

Hi all,

I would very much like to play an ancient wargame, but I don't know which system would be best for me. What are merits of each system? Also, I want to use the Pendraken 10mm armies, so please bear that in mind when recommending a system.

Thanks,

The main thing when picking a system is to go with one where you can get games. No point picking up DBM if everyone in your area played Impetus. You can scale most systems to 10mm but I believe Warmaster Ancients is specifically designed for 10mm.

Firstly welcome to the the Forum.

I'd support redben's suggestion that your choice be influenced by who you can persuade to play you! As a starter for ten though, Warhammer Ancients is designed for 10mm, but Hail Ceaser is also a great option.

I'm slightly confused. One of you said Warmaster Ancients, and the other said Warhammer Ancients. What's the difference?

I like the look of Hail Caesar and Impetus. What are the major differences?

I'll probably play the majority of games with my brothers, so that isn't really an issue.

I was wondering about whether it's necessary to buy the supplements. I know there's supplements for both HC and WAB; do I need them as well as the main rulebook? I would prefer not to pay another £20 if I don't have to.

Warmaster includes 25 army lists: Achaemenid Persian, Alexandrian Greek, Assyrian, Briton, Carthaginian, Dacian, Early Byzantine, Egyptian, Gallic, German, Greek, Hittite, Homeric, Hun, Imperial Roman, Indian, Late Achaemenid Persian, Late Roman, Norman, Norse, Parthian, Republican Roman, Sassanid Persian, Saxon, Successor

There are also some on-line:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/l.priestley/index.htm

You only need the supplements if the armies you want aren't covered. It also has a separate page here (as does HC):

viewforum.php?f=29

However, Warhammer Historical have now closed down. So you would need to go down the second hand route, eg:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=w ... m270.l1313

Hail Caesar has little in the way of lists at the moment, but there are due out next month I think: http://store.warlordgames.com/hail-caes ... 7121-p.asp

HC seems to be on the up an' up, but if it's just for games for within your family, then warmaster might be a cheaper solution (if you can source a copy).
