The Lost battalion and battaliuon games in general

Postby Robb » Fri Jun 06, 2008 11:34 am

Last night I finally got to watch the Lost Battalion movie which Alex B loaned me. Really enjoyable as its fully based on real events.

We do plan missions based around this event in Over the Top, (and yes Alex, I have some special "pigeon" rules planned!) but watching the film really inspired me regarding the style of games where the Great War game really works.

You do need to create the mission background and the game comes alive.

To simply view the war as 4 years stuck in trenches really misses what actually happened in the bigger picture and also what happened at the Battalion level as in this example and many many others.

One of the surprising things you learn when reading in detail about WW 1 (as I have since starting this project) is the amount of technological advancement during 4 years of conflict. Its in the Great War most of the tactical roots are set in stone for all future conflicts.

I am really looking forward to my next game (whenever that will be!)

yes, actually I should do a brief report on our last game and here it is.

We set up, and we were playing secure and hold.

3 vehicles and a pile of sacks were the objectives (so 4 in total)

I did really well for the first couple of turns and then Alex won as he secured more objectives than me. 3 to 1.

Conclusion- tanks are not that good especially when they get fired upon to the flank of the tank where the armour is easier to penetrate.

Pictures of the game are viewable in the WHW campaign weekend report.

Robb, have you watched "The Anzacs" mini series.

Episode Synopsis:
Disk 1: Episode 1 - 96:43 - Covers the pre-war, recruiting, training, Gallipoli and withdrawal
Disk 1: Episode 2 - 96:36 - Arriving in France, the battles of the Somme and Poziers
Disk 2: Episode 3 - 97:08 - The Somme winter offensive, the battle for the Hindenburg line, Blighty leave, Ypres, Menin Road and Broodseinde Ridge.
Disk 2: Episode 4 - 94:52 - The third battle of Ypres, the German Offensive of 1918, Amiens and Hazebrouck
Disk 3: Episode 5 - 95:08 - The coming of the Yanks, the appointment of Monash, the big push, Armistice and home.

Seven and a half hours of really good entertainment. All the equipment, uniforms and tanks are authentic. Highly recommended to anyone interested in WWI.

Yes and i hear its really good.

some one passed me a series of discs, but as yet, not had time to get beyond the "reason we make the series" bit.

It was a bit of a fluke getting to watch a whole movie in one go, I was so spoilt for choice it took me around 30 minutes to choose! (which meant several movies were then not options anyway!)

Hi Guys
Have seen a couple of clips of Anzac on U-Tube. Where can you get a full copy of this series.

Tommy- prepare to divert resources

Depending on what days and times you can get to WWorld, there might always be the chance for us to have a game, I have a painted British army, and the Germans are a work in progress.

Let me know if thats of interest.

Ah, that would be great, I could set up a game, we could play and I could still get home at a reasonable time while you can probably still do WAB against one of the 7- 7.30 chaps!

I will review schedule next week any good (as its Thursday this week already!)
