The 2nd Battle of Churchtown

Postby Hywel Dda » Sun Jan 23, 2011 3:18 am

Having enjoyed our first game of WHECW so much last week, my local group in Southport decided to re-run it from the start and I attach some pics of parts of the ensuing carnage. There are not so many of the enemy (Covenanters) as my opponent is still in the process of painting them. Notwithstanding their raiment, Divine Providence showered down upon the Scots (in a way never seen in Scottish World Cup draws and subsequent campaigns). Aside from rolling some rather good dice to rout my unit of heavy cavalry (Elite Gallopers) and spoiling my one succesful cavalry action by disintegrating my entire other unit of cavalry by grape shot at point blank (my troopers having been chasing a unit of routed Firelocks who failed to rally and the latter, in moving again, unmasked his artilley), Parliament's artillery commander (me) was struck down with a complete inability to estimate artillery ranges correctly - with the result that almost all of my rounds sailed off table and probably rained down on Mrs Miggins Pie Shoppe and Coffee House some miles to the rear casuing a prompt end to business that day and for the forseeable future. I also succeeded in misfiring a Saker in turn 2 with the result being a catastrophic explosion and one of my newly (off ebay) purchased foot units promptly decamped the field without firing a shot(hopefully they are not to become one of those units that nver achieves anything in game after game - I am sure every wargamer has one!), after a Leveller within the ranks convinced them that they all they were doing was replacing one ruling gentry elite with another (and my General, unless he had been riding an ancestor of Red Rum, had no chance of getting to them before they were off the table). All that notwithstanding it was an excellent game - the eagle eyed will notice various of the regiments flying distinctly non ECW banners and I will, over time, get some additional command stands to allow them to be swapped for TYW or ECW as appropriate.

It's always nice to see such a large army as yours lined up for battle (and a great motivation to get on with the painting, too). And it sounds like you had a great game. How many points did you play or did you simply line up everything you had?

We did it to 3000 pts a side using in my case Army Builder. In future would like to get in some more terrain but will have to game on a bigger table (which a friend has) to do that. Even by my standards to get the Agitator's first action to be a "We're being repressed" was an achievement - on the Scots side Leslie was stationed behind the Covenanting unit with a Preacher in it so in the case that they decided to hold a Conventicle (as I believe a Church Parade was referred to in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders up to their amalgamation in the 1960s - sadly of course at a level beyond our little toy soldiers, the support of the Scots Covenanters for Charles II was much misplaced, as the legislation brought in by him and only overturned after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 led to the 'Killing Times' in Scotland when many people were executed for in effect attending a prayer meeting - http://theroyalmile.org.uk/covenanters.html - equally of course Catholics were equally badly treated at other times)
Next time my Commander will keep a close eye on that unit!

PS - your point re motivation to get painting is a good one - i did a swap for a 15mm Russian Nap army (with a well known poster on these boards) which gave me an excellent basis of a force (well 2 armies really) and being a lazy painter I find it far easier to add units and the odd command figure than start from scratch. The look of the force esp the colours for different units also appeals to me (as do the very big flags!)

it was indeed a great game from my point of view, watching the enemy cannon overshoot with all guns, twice, despite me explaining the starting distance between armies on turn one. Also watching the ranter doing his thing, and promtly dragging his unit off the table, never let your opponant say "don't roll a 1" as sod's law will intervene.
Stuarts army looks great painted on the table top but to my shame the best i have been able to do was 2 units of Highlanders and 4 cannon painted, however give me a month of hard campaigning (well painting) and a tin of army dip and my forces will be ready to take to the field once more.

Bishop lord, if you fancy a game down at CACK, just let me know, i'll fight against king or parliment all for the glory of God.

Gentlemen, very nice.

Thanks Hywel Dda. I am based in Skelmersdale and have an 8 by 4 table if you fancy popping over. Only have about 1500 -2000pts. Unfortunately your email wouldn't open. perhaps you could try again?

Yes definitely - I could almost do an 8 x 4 but its a bit of a struggle. Skelmersdale is not too far away at all. Have tried again with PM
